7 Tips in Helping an Addict

Educate Yourself

When someone struggles with addiction, they are often dependent on substances or behaviors to feel happy. Understanding the disease process and how it impacts family members can help loved ones stay away from harmful habits that will only hurt them more than anyone else ever could!

There is plenty of information out there for those who want answers-SAMHSA has great educational resources which provide insight into this complex issue while also providing access groups/support through their website as well internet searches about addictions, diseases processes etc... Get Support The difficulty in life caused by addiction can be overwhelming. There are support groups for family members and friends who have lost someone to an alcoholic or drug-addicted loved one, including Alateen (focused on Alcohol) Nar-Anon( focused primarily towards prescription drug abuse), but also other types such as II Married Men's Group which deals specifically with men struggling between their desire/needs versus what they think is right when dealing with their situation. Get Counseling We all know how hard it is to live with an addict. There are many resources available for you, but they can be difficult and time-consuming if not found by oneself or one's family members on their own initiative (ie: conducting google searches).

However there may also exist the option of getting individual counseling which would assist both parties in finding what each needs from therapy - whether it's just emotional support; helping manage cravings/addiction symptoms like withdrawal discomfort.

Seek Specialty Help There are many resources in your area to help with financial or legal issues. You can find an attorney provider by calling the local Mental Health Agency, which provides sliding scale fees for those who need it most! Churches may also provide some low cost counseling services as well - just ask around where they exist closest before starting up this new search project of yours so that when we get done here today there won't be any surprises waiting on top of us after all :) Don’t Enable The disease of addiction has a strong grip on those it infects. Even when family members have their own personal struggles with the substance or behaviors, they may still be unaware that what is happening right under them can easily get out-of-control if left unchecked by intervention from outside forces.

It's important not to financially assist an addict in any way as this just prolongs your loved ones' inevitable spiral down into deeper trouble than before--you're only helping him avoid consequences for themselves. Have Realistic Expectations We all need someone in our lives who will listen when we feel like no one else can understand. When this person is an addict, it’s even more important that they get the help they deserve because of how thoroughly convinced addicts are about their own strength and ability to quit anytime without consequences- which isn't true!

But I'm here today telling you there's always something worth fighting for--whether or not things seem hopeless right now.. Take Care of Yourself It is important to focus on your own life and take care of yourself. If you are stressed out due to the addict's issues, in addition to yours-it creates resentment which makes it difficult for someone who has created so much difficulty within our family system.

By exercising regularly , getting plenty of sleep every day as well as appearing socialized can help us better assist those we love when they're ready to accept needed assistance. Focusing solely upon them may cause more harm than good.
